Castle in Janowiec – a Renaissance pearl on the Vistula River
The Castle in Janowiec is an impressive Renaissance residence built on a high Vistula River escarpment, about 30 km from the Arche Nałęczów hotel (approx. 35 minutes by car). Built between 1508–1526 by Mikołaj Firlej, and later expanded by his son Piotr, the castle served as the seat of the magnate families Firlej, Tarlów and Lubomirski. Currently, as a stable ruin, it is a fascinating place for lovers of history, architecture and picturesque landscapes.

The Castle in Janowiec on the Vistula River is one of the branches of the Nadwiślańskie Museum in Kazimierz Dolny, being one of its six divisions. This bastion-style castle, erected at the beginning of the 16th century and expanded until the 18th century, was formerly the residence of the magnate families of Firlej, Tarlów, and Lubomirski. Renowned architects and sculptors were involved in the castle's construction, including Santi Gucci Fiorentino, Giovanni Battista Falconi, and Tylman of Gameren.
The Nadwiślańskie Museum undertook efforts to secure the castle ruins and carried out partial reconstruction, which included restoring the so-called North House – a kind of palace added in the first half of the 17th century to the previously existing defensive wall. Currently, on the ground floor, three rooms house exhibits dedicated to the history of the castle, its former owners, and the conservation processes of the building. In the cellars, visitors can admire a fascinating ceramics exhibition titled "Dutch Faience. Decorative motifs from the 17th to the 20th century. From the collection of Jan Jaworski." An additional attraction for tourists are the multi-level galleries that offer charming views of the castle courtyard and the picturesque Vistula valley.
