BOTANICAL GARDEN OF MARIA CURIE-SKŁODOWSKA UNIVERSITY IN LUBLIN
HISTORY
The Botanical Garden of UMCS in Lublin was established in 1965 on the initiative of Professor Józef Motyka. The area of the future Garden was selected due to its physiography and landscape values. Interestingly, there was a health resort in the area of the Garden in the 19th century with iron healing waters. Before the land ownership rights were obtained for Sławinek, the first nurseries and plant collections were already established in 1946 in the area of the present academic town.
IN THE GARDEN
In the Garden, there is a reconstructed Kościuszko Manor, with the first records dating back to 1720. In the second half of the 18th century, it was owned by Jan Nepomucen Kościuszko, the uncle of Tadeusz Kościuszko. The property is listed in the Register of Monuments of Lublin and is under conservation protection. Near the Manor, the remains of a defensive fortification, the so-called redoubt of Kościuszko, have been preserved. It is the only preserved work of earthen fortification architecture in Poland. In 2020, the Kościuszko Redoubt along with the covered road was entered into the provincial register of monuments.
